On the Long March, he rescued people in the marshes. During the Battle of Shanchengbao, he was severely injured and sent for recovery. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, due to his outstanding performance, he was assigned to serve as a guard next to Chairman Mao and earned Mao's recognition and praise for his diligent work. During a charcoal-making task, Zhang Side tragically lost his life, and Chairman Mao personally attended his memorial service, delivering the speech "Serve the People."
